Mass DM (spam)
Also known as: DM spam, Bulk DM
The practice of sending the same direct message to many recipients at once — explicitly against X's terms and a fast track to suspension.
In depth
Mass DM'ing is sending identical or near-identical direct messages to many recipients in a short window. Common tactics: "Hey, loved your tweet, check out my newsletter" or sales pitches to anyone who liked a related post.
X's automated spam detection in 2026 catches this within hours: 5-10 identical DMs from a new account triggers a temporary suspension; repeat offenses lead to permanent bans. The detection has gotten significantly better post-2023.
Legitimate alternative: send personalized 1:1 DMs after meaningful engagement. Reply to someone's tweet thoughtfully, then DM with context ("loved your take on X — wanted to share something related"). Slower but actually converts.
Example
A new account that DMs 50 strangers the same "check out my course" message will be flagged within 24 hours and likely suspended.
