DM (Direct message)

Also known as: Direct message, Twitter DM

A private message sent between X accounts, separate from the public timeline.

In depth

Direct messages are private — only the sender and receiver see them. By default you can only DM accounts that follow you, but accounts can open their inbox to anyone (which becomes a spam funnel).

DMs are where most of the business outcomes on X actually happen — cold pitches turn into deals, replies turn into partnerships, friendships turn into co-founders. The public timeline is the funnel; DMs are the close. Automating them is the fastest way to get reported as spam — keep DM outreach human and specific.

Now put it to work

AutoTweet generates and schedules X content tuned for the algorithm — the same one this glossary just explained.
