Engagement rate

Also known as: ER

Total engagements (likes + replies + reposts + bookmarks) divided by impressions, expressed as a percentage.

In depth

Engagement rate normalizes engagement against reach, so accounts with 1,000 followers can be compared to accounts with 1,000,000. The X median is around 0.5%. Anything above 2% is exceptional.

The algorithm doesn't reward engagement rate directly — it rewards specific weighted signals (replies > reposts > likes), and replies from accounts you don't follow weight even higher. But engagement rate is a reasonable proxy for "is my content actually resonating."
