Engagement rate without context is meaningless. A 1.5% rate is excellent in news / consumer; underperforming in B2B founder. This cheatsheet is the reference for what 'good' looks like in your specific category.
How to calculate engagement rate
| Formula | (Likes + replies + RTs + bookmarks) / impressions |
| Where to find | X Analytics per-tweet, then aggregate |
| Sample size | Calculate over 30 days, not 1 tweet |
| Note | Profile clicks NOT included in most ER calculations |
B2B founder / SaaS audiences
| Median | 1.5-2.5% |
| Top quartile | 3-5% |
| Top 1% | 7-12% |
| Notes | Smaller audiences with high signal beat larger broad ones |
B2C / consumer audiences
| Median | 0.5-1.5% |
| Top quartile | 2-3% |
| Top 1% | 4-8% |
| Notes | Lower base rates because audiences scroll faster |
Creator / personal brand
| Median | 2-3% |
| Top quartile | 4-6% |
| Top 1% | 8-15% |
| Notes | Tight niche creators see highest rates |
News / media accounts
| Median | 0.3-0.8% |
| Top quartile | 1-2% |
| Top 1% | 3-5% |
| Notes | High impressions, low engagement rate is the norm |
What drives ER up
| Tight niche | Specific audience = higher rates |
| Reply discipline | Replies multiply engagement in algorithm |
| Hook craft | Better hooks = higher engagement per impression |
| Thread cadence | Threads earn 3x singletons |
| Time spent | Posts that earn long dwell time get amplified |
Common questions
My ER is below median for my niche. What do I do?+
Audit in order: (1) hook craft (most common issue), (2) audience-niche match (sometimes your audience is broader than your niche claim), (3) posting cadence (under-posting reduces compounding). Above-median ER is mostly content-quality work, not volume work.
Do bots / fake followers reduce my engagement rate?+
Yes — bought followers tank ER because they're real accounts viewing without engaging. If you have purchased followers, ER will be 30-70% lower than what's possible with the same content + clean audience. Don't buy followers; they actively hurt growth.
